Euphoria Season 3 Update: Production Started, Zendaya’s Back as Rue

It’s been roughly three years since Rue (Zendaya, duh) walked (or, you know, stumbled spectacularly) off our screens. Three years! That’s practically a lifetime in TV land, enough time for Twitter to both crown and cancel at least five new It Girls and for skinny jeans to make a questionable comeback. Between the writers’ strike, the actors’ strike, and whatever existential crises Sam Levinson was going through over at The Idol (let’s just agree to never speak of that again, shall we?), it felt touch-and-go for a hot minute there whether Euphoria Season 3 would even materialize. Throw in the genuine tragedy of Angus Cloud’s passing, and the whole thing felt shrouded in a fog of uncertainty.

But HBO, bless their prestige-TV-loving hearts, just threw us a lifeline: a single, glorious still of Zendaya back in all her Rue-ish glory. Is she rocking the hoodie? Naturally. Does she look like she’s about to either solve a crime or relapse spectacularly? Almost certainly. It’s Rue, people! This is peak storytelling.

Now, before speculation spirals into fan-fiction territory wilder, let’s break down what we actually know, versus what’s pure conjecture fueled by late-night Twitter binges.

First, yes, production is officially underway in early 2025. Casey Bloys, the big cheese over at HBO, promised as such last year, squashing rumors that the whole shebang was getting scrapped. Thank the TV gods! Also, Season 3 is confirmed to be eight episodes. Remember talk about taking Rue’s character in a COMPLETELY different direction? Like, maybe Rue becoming a Private Investigator or something? It sounds like someone had a vision board based on a fever dream after binging Veronica Mars and Maury.

Speaking of Rue, Zendaya herself has been publicly jonesing for this season. She even admitted she was worried about stepping back into the role after some time away, feeling “rusty.” But fear not, because stars such as Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, and Jacob Elordi were given the greenlight to work on other projects during the delay, and Zendaya also confirmed her schedule was clear to return to Euphoria.

Most of the primary players are expected to return for this round – think Hunter Schafer, Nika King, Eric Dane (Cal Jacobs, the daddy with issues), Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, Maude Apatow, and Storm Reid. Obviously, the wonderful Angus Cloud will be painfully missed; the show just won’t be the same without Fez. Barbie Ferreira is out as Kat Hernandez, so the show will have one less complicated female relationship to unpack.

Of course, the Season 2 finale left us dangling harder than Nate Jacobs on a self-destructive bender. Will Laurie, the drug dealer who makes my skin crawl, come back to haunt Rue? Is Nate’s dad, Cal, really gone for good? And will Lexi and Cassie ever recover from the onstage drama explosion that was Lexi’s play? Euphoria loves its loose ends.

Euphoria Season 3 is slated to drop sometime in 2026.

In the meantime, there is ample time to rewatch and theorize about the previous seasons on Max. And frankly my dears, I cannot wait to see how these trainwrecks of beautiful characters will ruin their lives this season.
